- Begin by finding some of your dogs favorite treats and be sure they're bite sized!
- Be sure your dog knows you have a treat (he should be staring at your hand) and hold the treat at his nose. As you move
the treat toward his tail say "sit" in a loud voice that he can hear.
- When he sits give him the treat and make a huge fuss over him!!
Troubleshooting Sit
If your puppy is still having trouble sitting look below for a few more tips and tricks...
- If your puppy is just backing up when you move the treat backwards try backing your puppy into a corner or a wall. This
way he won't be able to back up and will almost be forced to sit down.
- Never say sit more than once. That is a bad habit that many dog owners get into. Say it loud enough the first time so
that he definitely heard you and then wait. If he doesn't respond in 1-2 seconds help him gently into a sit. Don't push on
his bottom, just take your arm under his bottom and fold his legs for him. Giving your dog a command more than once teaches
him that he can ignore you the first time (or the second, third and fourth times). Expect him to listen to you.
- Practice every day, 3-4 times each session. Your puppy probably won't sit the first time but don't push it. Repitition
every day is all he needs. Don't get angry with him and don't practice too much at first.
- Take your puppy outside and practice after he gets it inside. He needs to be able to sit with all sorts of distractions.
Take him to the park, in your backyard, in a shopping center, anywhere you can!
