So you're thinking about getting a puppy?

First of all, be sure to read our "want a new puppy" page. But after that have you ever really thought about what's in a breed? The breed of dog you choose could determine whether or not you keep your new puppy or give it away! Below are some links to some breed information pages and a quick summary of the average personality of each! Don't forget the animal shelter though! Mixed breed dogs are often the best dogs you can find! Unless you are planning on doing AKC conformation, you don't NEED a purebred dog. BAR{K-9} will mostly participate in competitions that are all breed inclusive.

Goldens are beautiful dogs. Unfortunately they tend to shed alot but are otherwise extremely trainable, loveable, fun dogs. They will always be ready to go do something but don't require quite as much time as a lab. They are always friendly and not at all protective.

The GSD is a very loyal companion who is perfect for service of any kind. These dogs need to have a job to be completely happy and you must be careful to be the alpha dog in your household. Training is a must for these highly intelligent dogs but with a tiny bit of effort they will learn very quickly. They are bred to be protectors and will naturally take on that role.

The Husky is a beautiful dog that comes in many colors. Their eyes are captivating and they appear very noble. These dogs are not known for their intelligence or trainability however and require alot of excersise. They are fond of their families but need a firm hand to train them in obedience. They can also be very difficult to potty train. Becareful not to exert them too much in hot weather because their coat is made to keep them warm in arctic temperatures. If you have a stronger will than they do and love to excersise, this dog will be the perfect companion.

The Great Dane is a gentle giant. They should never be ferocious and are always loved and admired by onlookers. They are huge couch potatos that love a good nap and cuddle. They should appear strong but their attitude should be that of a dog who doesn't know his own strength. They love people and doing new things. These dogs have a very short lifespan and require extra care so that they don't develop joint issues, especially in their hips. Firm and consistent obedience training is a must while they are young and small so that you can have control of them when they grow to full size

The Border Collie is a smart dog with a willingness to learn and please. They are full of energy and must be consistantly excersised. They are loving and great family dogs. They are commonly used for agility, obedience and flyball because of their speed and trainability and if you are looking to get to the top, this is the dog for you. They can be extremely destructive if they aren't properly excersised on a daily basis.

Weimaraners are high energy loveable dogs. It is a trainable dog but one that requires a firm hand. It is very affectionate and loves being a part of the family. Doberman Pinscher
The Doberman is an outstandingly muscular dog with incredible power. They draw attention to themselves by their sleek muscular appearance as well as their intense expression. They should be fearless guard dogs and extremely athletic. Fear from the owner is unacceptable as they must be assertively handled. Although they have an aggressive reputation they are very sweet and loving and excell at just about anything dogs can do. They are a wonderful, loyal animal.

Medium Sized Breeds

The Pit Bull is a dog with a bad reputation. Although a majority of Pit Bulls are bred and trained to fight illegally, a correctly and thoughtfully bred dog can be a good companion. Hours of research are necessary to find a reputable breeder because protection and aggression are deeply bred into these dogs. They do love to please and would die for their owner. They are also intelligent, good natured and a lovely family pet with the right handling.

Beagles are sturdy, medium sized dogs with a great sense of smell. This can sometimes get them in trouble off a leash or in the backyard. They have a distinct bark ending with a howl that can easily be disruptive. They love everyone because they are very sweet and easy going. They can be stubborn and training takes a bit of effort on the owner's part.

Schnauzers are adorable, energetic dogs. They are playful and affectionate but they demand time and companionship from their owners. They are not known to be very friendly toward other dogs so if you have a roommate who has a dog or are expecting to have one, be sure to socialize your puppy well at a dog park or puppy classes. They do bark but are not yappy. They are excellent travel dogs and are good watch dogs. If you want a medium sized breed that is spunky and loves to go go go, this is a great breed to choose. Just be sure to meet the puppies parents so you can get to know theu temperament.

I put these dogs under the Medium Sized section because of their attitude. They are rather on the small side but they have more energy when they are 10 than most puppies have when they are 6 months old. They are absolutely fearless dogs who love attention. They take an experienced trainer to train correctly and are chasers so they shouldn't be left off their leash until they are well trained. If you have time, energy, and a help to train your dog, you could have a great relationship!

These guys love to play! They are full of energy and always ready to go but also very loving and sweet. They are protective but not aggressive. They love families and are good with other dogs. They are easy to train because they are very intelligent. They make wonderful pets as long as you can keep them excersised.

The Boxer is an eye catching breed of dog. It is full of energy and loves to run. They are extremely intelligent and as long as you take the time, they will pick up tricks quickly! Females can be dominate but with proper socialization and training it shouldn't be a big issue. They make excellent guard dogs and don't have a bad reputation for aggression as many of the german breeds do. They are lovely pets and wonderful friends

Dachshunds are perfect for apartment living. They are spunky and playful while also being extremely cute. They come in so mnay different types such as short haired, long haired, miniature and regular. They travel well and hold their own against larger dogs. They can get a bit of an attitude and it's important to watch their weight so that they don't develop back problems.

The Pug is a curious and funny breed. Very quirky and distinct looking. They have wonderful personalities and have been known to occasionally swim. Allergies and Asthma are a problem with Pugs because of their nasal anatomy. Respiratory infections tend to also be a problem. They are not yappy like some other small breeds and serve as good watch dogs in the house. They require plenty of attention but if you've got the time they are very loyal companions.

Poms are fun dogs that love to learn. If you socialize them well they can get along with other dogs. Their bark can be yappy and they are alert dogs more than watch dogs. They have been known to be chewers and destroyers so careful training is required to keep this habit at bay. As long as you are okay with a big dog in a little dog suit, this dog should be fine for you!

This is a dog that demands affection but is very lively and a great companion animal. For a small dog it is extremely loyal and acts very suspicious around strangers. As like other small dogs, chihuahuas can be hard to house break and stubborn to train. Luckily they are small enough that just the basic training should be necessary. If you are willing to put in the time and love this little dog, you'll have a lovely friend.

These dogs are perfect for the allergic pet owner. They are one of the smartest breeds of dog which makes them easy to train. They can be barkers but not if they are well trained. Their larger counterpart the Standard Poodle is the same way. Being a small dog it is easy to travel with and won't shed everywhere. They are generally good with other dogs. This dog is a joy to own, if not a little girly!

This is a very affectionate breed of dog that loves to be around its owners. It is easy to live with and thinks that every visitor is there to see it! This breed is very competitive and excells at obedience if trained properly. Be sure to research the breeder as some lines can be very timid and prone to fear snapping. If you want a dog that is always happy to see you, and everyone else, this is the perfect breed for you!

Yorkies are spunky toy dogs with alot of hair! They are adventurous and don't seem to know how small they are. (that or they have little man syndrome) They can be very loveable but very loyal to their owners. They are pretty easily trainable and aren't fond of rough children. As long as you like to brush hair or take this dog to the groomer, they will be a longterm companion

I think dogs are the most amazing creatures; they give unconditional love.  For me they are the role model for being alive.  ~Gilda Radner
