Down is a bit harder than sit but with practice it will be a piece of cake!

To begin teaching your dog to lay down...
  • Start with your dog in a sit.
  • Next, drag a treat on the ground from between his front paws, toward you saying "down" in a loud voice.
  • If your dog doesn't lay down right away help him gently by picking up his front paws and laying them on the ground. Then praise your dog by saying, "good down!!".

Troubleshooting Down
  • Practice makes perfect. Only practice 4-5 times a session until your dog has got it down!
  • If your puppy doesn't lay down by dragging a treat on the ground, try starting with the treat at his nose and then bringing it straight down to the floor.
  • Remember not to repeat "down" or else your dog could start ignoring you.
  • Try adding hand signals when your dog understands the voice command. This will make it fun and interesting! Soon, you won't have to say anything to get your dog to lay down!
  • Also remember to practice in an area free of distractions until your dog gets it. Once you know he understands the command, slowly add distractions so he learns to listen to you no matter what!

The reason a dog has so many friends is that he wags his tail instead of his tongue.  ~Author Unknown
