To teach stay...
- Begin in your regular training room that is free of distractions with your dog in a sit.
- Hold your palm in front of his nose and loudly say "stay".
- Wait for less than a second and praise your dog with "good stay!"
- Slowly build up the time from 1, 2, 3 and more seconds. Once your dog can stay for a good 10 seconds begin walking away
from him slowly, one step at a time. Do this until you can be all the way across the room from him! This will help you teach
"come"
Troubleshooting Stay
- If your puppy keeps wiggling around and won't stay try surprising him with the command "stay". Don't use it during training
time at first. While you're watching TV or eating dinner tell your puppy to sit and then say stay. Give him a treat almost
immediately. Sometimes during training a puppy gets so excited and eager to learn so he can get a treat that he just won't
stay. This should help you get the command "stay" to stick in his brain a little better.
- Take this one slow. Puppies don't really like to stay and if you let him run off from a stay too much he'll learn that
he can leave whenever he likes.
- This is the one command you CAN repeat a few times. Some dogs just need to be reminded that they are staying and that
you didn't forget about them! Don't say it too often but if you want to make him stay for 30 seconds then its ok to remind
him sometimes.
