To teach come...
- This needs to be done on a leash for a while until your dog is coming every time. A 20 foot leash is best but whatever
you have should work just fine.
- Put your dog in a sit stay and walk about 2 feet away. Have a toy or yummy treat in your hand that gets your puppy really
excited.
- Say "come" in a loud voice and then get really excited about the toy or treat so that your puppy comes straight to you
and wants to know what's going on.
- Praise him and give him what you have. You need to make this experience a positive one. Never scare your puppy!
Troubleshooting Come
- The biggest problem with come is that people use it when they're angry at their dogs. Puppies are NOT going to come willingly
if they just had an accident or tore up the couch so don't use the command. If you're disciplining a puppy they should be
doing the thing they are getting disciplined for so you shouldn't have to call them.
- Almost all puppies will go through an "I don't feel like it" stage. Be firm and consistent and practice come alot. Don't
let your puppy off a leash until you are confident in his "come" abilities.
- Just as in all the other tricks, expect him to do what you're asking. NEVER EVER call him 10 times or even 3 times.
If you called him he needs to come and if he doesn't go and find him, make him look at you and firmly say come, drawing him
close to you. Don't do this meanly or angrily but let him know you mean it!
- Practice with a TON of distractions after he gets it. Come could save his life one day. Practice around cars, bikes, kids,
dogs, squirrels, etc
