When you have a little dog this isn't such a big deal but if you have a large or even medium size dog it can be frightening for your guest.

Teaching Off...
  • This can only really be taught "in the moment". If you'd like to wait till a guest comes over that's fine or you can have a friend help you practice by knocking on the door and coming inside. There are a few methods shown below:
  1. When your dog goes to jump on your friend tell him "off" in a loud voice and have your friend turn his body away from the dog and ignore it until it stops jumping.
  2. When your friend comes in the door have him tell your dog to sit. When it does, let your friend pet the dog a lot and make a big fuss over him!
  3. Get an empty soda can and about 10-20 nuts and bolts from your garage. Fill the soda can with the nuts and bolts and tape it shut. When your dog goes to jump, startle him with the soda can by shaking it once or twice.

Troubleshooting Off
  • If your dog consistantly jumps on people try putting him in a sit stay yourself before you open the door.
  • Also, try leaving your dog in another room as you greet your guests and then bring your dog out when they're ready. Be sure they know to tell him off when he jumps and that they make him sit before they give him any attention

You think dogs will not be in heaven?  I tell you, they will be there long before any of us.  ~Robert Louis Stevenson
