Teaching Leave It...
- Get something of yours that your dog likes to chew on. Shoes, the trash can, a roll of toilet paper, or even some of your
dinner!
- Set it on a low coffee table or the floor and have your dog on a leash.
- Walk your dog into the room and gently lead him in the direction of the object you two are working on.
- When the dog shows interest and touches it with his nose, quickly jerk the leash backward while loudly saying
"leave it".
- When the dog turns to follow you after the quick jerk give him a treat and praise him. Practice this on anything you want
(just not his toys). In theory, no matter what you practice on the idea is for him to learn the command for any other thing,
not just for the particular object you chose.
Troubleshooting Leave It
- This is a pretty straight forward command. Not a whole lot should go crazily wrong! If your dog doesn't get it at
first, no worries, just keep practicing on a leash.
- Once you feel confident enough to practice this off leash, be sure your dog has a collar on so you can gently remind him
with a quick tug that you're still making the descisions.
