Potty training!!! This is the first thing your puppy should learn but most don't think of it as real training and wouldn't group it in the training section. Once you realize the steps and figure out your puppy's needs, it won't be hard at all and you'll ealize how much training it really is.

To potty train your puppy... (it isn't really a step by step process. These are just tips to make it WAY easier on you)
  • Feed your puppy meals. Small puppies need to eat three times a day. Leave their food down for 10-15 minutes. If they don't eat it, take it up and wait till the next feeding time. After your puppy eats it will need to use the bathroom in about 10 minutes so take it outside and wait. Feeding your puppy meals will help you better predict when he needs to use the potty.
  • If you aren't going to be paying close attention to your puppy (like when you're studying or wathing TV) keep him on a leash close by you so he can get your attention better and he won't be wandering around your apartment.
  • Don't get angry at your puppy if he potties inside. Gently tell him no and show him the door. It's your fault if he potties inside. You need to constantly moniter his behavior and attitude. He doesn't know any better.
  • Take him outside every 45 minutes. It may seem like alot but it's better than always cleaning up after him. They really do have small bladders.
  • Praise him like he won you a million dollars when he goes potty outside!!! You need to tell him that you want him to go outside rather than inside and praise is the perfect way to do that.
  • When you leave, put your puppy in a kennel. When you come back, take him straight outside.
  • Puppy pads are ok if you need to be gone a long time and you can confine him to the bathroom or laundry room but try not to rely on them.
  • If you want your puppy to use a specific area in the yard, take him there every single time (don't get lazy!). They will learn quickly that they need to go potty in that same spot.
